Concept map Reflection. Dominic Whitewater

Web list Reflections

Zachary: This was a very interesting presentation on the Pueblo Revolt. Especially coming from someone who knows about it. Having it be from his own cultural background, it just made the presentation that much more interesting. Always nice to learn about different tribes from someone who knows their stuff.
Raymond: With this presentation, I have definitely learned a lot about the medieval ages. I like how he went into detail with the order of power and described the way of life back then. Painted a great picture of how life in the middle ages was for us.
Shannon: Shannon did a great job in describing how to grow a plant. Was very age appropriate, and very clear for kindergarten age kids to understand. Overall I did enjoy her presentation and liked the illustrations.
Markita: Her concept map of DECA was very inviting and definitely made me want to join. If I were still in high school. lol She did a very good job about telling about this program and being very enthusiastic about it at the same time. Great Job!
Manny: This was a very simple and easy to understand presentation on shapes. This is a great age appropriate concept map for children. Very nice :)

*Teacher Websites
-
This website is designed for teachers who are looking for presentations of
which ever topic they are teaching in their class. It also allows you to create
assignment based on who your audience is. Ex. K-12. The site would mainly be
helpful to teachers who teach history, geography and perhaps science. The site
allows you to focus on what age group you are teaching. And based off of that,
you may choose from worksheets and activities to give your students. It is not
very visually appealing to students, but I feel that the sight may be very
helpful toward helping teachers in assigning work to students that correlate
with the topic being taught in the classroom. To me, this website is mainly
designed to allow teachers to find helpful videos, PowerPoints, games and
quizzes that correlate with topics that the teacher chooses. Especially today,
when the majority of students in the elementary and high school levels learn
better with visual aid. And the videos and slide shows definitely help with
this. I definitely would recommend this site to any teacher to use. It would be
very helpful.
-
CNN.com is basically a news center for the show, however through the student
news page teachers may use this site to keep up with current events going on in
either the US. Or the rest of the world. Therefore, I would say that this would
benefit the teacher rather than the students. Student may use this site to go
back and do research on whatever topic that the instructor is teaching. The
information gathered by the teacher may be used as well to keep the students
engaged in class by using the latest news for discussion. Previous news casts
are archived on the website, thus allowing the teacher to go back and bring up
a news topic or video that correlates with the class topic. On the website it
states “CNN news is designed for use in middle and high school classrooms,
However, it is always a good idea for you to preview each program before
showing it to the classroom.” Basically meaning that not all images or videos
may be appropriate to show students at a high school level.
-This
website is designed for both teachers and students, but in my opinion I would
say that the information and topics on the page may be used in the instructor’s
lesson plan. As well as being used to create assignments and a lesson plan,
students will be able to use ted.com for research purposes. The website offers
a large collection of lectures varying from present events or cultural
informational presentations, also known as “Ted Talks”. With these videos,
teachers are able to show these videos in class teaching the students in a way
that he or she may not be able to. Ted.com is very easy to use from a teacher’s
standpoint. With the search engine, they are able to search the topic they wish
to show in class and the videos themselves are very helpful and informational.
I would definitely recommend this site to any teacher who likes to show videos
in class. Very easy to use and simple.
-Edutopia.com
is a very helpful resource for teachers that may be used for learning how to
manage a class, or a way to find educational grants and resources. The site
also allows you to go to pages where a teacher can learn how to better him or
herself in a class room environment. As well as looking up things yourself, you
may also join the teachers’ blog and connect to other teachers who may be going
through the same problems within their classes. So this website is definitely
geared towards school teachers who teach k-12.
-Right
from the get go, the page allows you to narrow down your search by choosing
from what grade level you are teaching. From there, education.com will allow
you as a teacher to print out worksheets, science fair projects and activities
for your students. From there, a large collection of worksheets are there to
print based off of what grade level you teach. Such as coloring templates,
informational brochures that you can put together as a class. Although it says
it is good for grade levels K-12, it seems to be very good for elementary grades.
Only because the visual aids and facts would be too appealing to a high school
student for example.
-This
website is a great resource for teachers who may have assigned a book for their
students to read. With the large selection of books on the page, teachers may
choose from a book that the class is reading and the website has worksheets and
quizzes the students will be able to take. Some of these activities include
vocabulary cards that the students can get from the book. After the class is
done reading, the pages offers questions that you as the teacher may ask the
students to create a class discussion. Overall, this website would only be
helpful if the entire class was handed all books and went along with the
instructor.
-Teachers.net
would be a great resource for teachers to add over a dozen classroom projects
to help enhance their curriculum. Also assignments are available to add to
their lesson plans. The lesson plans that are offered on the website are ones
that have been submitted from teachers across the US. One of the tabs on the page labeled as
“Teacher Classifieds” allows teachers to buy and sell items for your classroom.
A new tab on the page allows teachers to search for jobs based on location.
This application also will allow one to receive job alerts, form a resume, also
apply for jobs online. Very useful for teachers in the classroom and to help
get a new teaching job.
-As
stated on the page itself, it is designed to “Bring your classroom to life with
PBS”. For first time users to the page, it offers a Webinar allowing you to
explore PBS learning media custom’s additional features plus functionality with
its “101” tutorial. This webinar teaches instructors how to effectively use the
website with ease. If teachers need new assignments of work for students, the
productivity tools for teachers tab takes them to where puzzle builder, quiz
maker apps and story board tools make it easy to personalize learning for
students. Like many other websites, this one allows teachers to select what
grade they are teaching. And based off that, the worksheets and quizzes are
personalized to that grade level. Overall a great resource for teachers looking
to add work and activities to their curriculum.
-This
website is designed for teachers teaching any grade level. It is website that
can help educators integrate space and science into their lessons and weekly
activities, enhancing their curriculum. As well as getting students more
interested in the topics of science with fun facts and intriguing pictures and
videos. NASA.gov also has a calendar of
scheduled events that will occur within our solar system. With this
information, instructors can have their students follow along with these
events.
-This
website is basically a place where teachers can go to purchase items for the
classroom. They may also download and print worksheets, but mainly gears toward
the elementary grade levels. However, the items that can be purchased are white
bards, calendars, and decoration to make the classroom setting more visually
appealing to students. Based on a previous buyers testimonial “I am a first time purchaser, and am thrilled with the
selection, type of resources, and pricing for your products. Thank you for an
easy to navigate website, as well as an excellent catalog. You have gained a
loyal customer. After placing my order with your company, I am excited to
receive the items and start the school year. Thanks so much for what you
do!" I can see that this is a great resource for teachers who are looking
to make their classrooms a visually appealing place for their students.
*Student Websites
-Brain
pop is specifically designed for students in K-12 grades. It offers animated
science, health, technology, math, social studies, arts, music and English
movies, quizzes and activity pages. Very easy site to use, however if you are
having trouble. The page has a tour button that shows you step by step how to
use the page for first time users. Brain pop covers all class topics offered in
school. The page itself is very visually appealing to the younger age group.
-This
particular website is mainly focused on the K-12 grade levels. But I believe
that it’s more appealing to the elementary and middle school grades. The
colorful and visual effects are very stimulating and invites the students to
the page. Along with facts and information about school topics, the site also
gives quizzes and games based off the topic chosen by the student. Overall, the
website is basically the same as the “mother page” Natgeo.com. On the kid’s
page, it has the same information but the game options and the visual colors
are more focused on the younger age group.
-Discover
kids is definitely leaning more to the grade levels K-6. The main focus of this page is games, but
within these games students are given facts about what they are playing and are
verbally praised when they do well in the games. For example, the game “Build
your own mummy” take you through the process of mummification was performed in
Egyptian times. Not only is it a game, but while playing the game it tells the
player facts about this specific time period in history as well as their
language and culture. Depending on how well one did in this game the end result
is a properly assembled mummy.
-This
website is mainly a large collection of children’s games. Some are just games
that come from recent movies but, there are also educational games that help
the student in school subjects such as science, math and social studies. There
are also worksheets and activities that students can use and study to keep
their mind sharp in the classroom.
-Starfall.com
is obviously designed for the kindergarten grade level. From opening up the
page, it gives you the option to choose from the tabs “ABC’s and learn to read”
And that is what usually goes on in this grade. But it sure is a visually
inviting page for youngsters. For sure if I was five years old, I’d be5 really
into this website. So, overall it is a great site for young children learning
how to read and write.
-Just
like Starfall.com, abcya.com is also a website that focuses on grades K-5th
grade. Also like star fall, the page is very visually stimulating making it
very interesting for youngsters. Great site nonetheless.
-This
website is a fun, interactive way to get the kids moving allowing you can take
as little time as you need. The page is easy to set up and most importantly,
fun for the kids. It is a great way to get students that are grades K-5 to get
and stay involved in the class. One of the nice features that the website
offers is that you may sign in with a user name and password allowing you as a
student to keep track with the work you are doing. As a teacher this is very
helpful to see the progress of the student on the website.
-Knowledgekids.ca
is a great site focusing on young children within the grades of kindergarten
and fifth grade. The games that are on the page are designed to allow the
children to make good decisions in school and real life. The games give the
kids options that they are faced with in real life situations. As well as the
videos and activities.
-This
particular website that is designed for elementary level students, teaches kids
to read and write with the assistance of Furry characters. The main character
going by the name of “Big bird”. The website is based off of the show Sesame
Street that shows on PBS. The shows that are shown on television are archived
on the website ad are categorized by the topics that are taught. T
-Leapfrog
is a website where you may choose what grade level the student is and from
there activities and games are given to help the student learn to read and
write. When the student is doing well on the games, they are verbally praised
giving them and incentive to continue to do well. Over all a great site for
young students within the grades of kindergarten to fifth grade.

Reflection on other student's Project Presentations
I fully enjoyed the other student's power point presentations! The variety of animals was indicative of the diverse views and interests of our class. A nice aspect to the assignment was the utilization of rubrics, the teachers' tool for fair and objective grading. Some students were short on pictures or didn't go into enough detail about life cycles. These were easy to notice through the use of our rubric coupled with a keen eye for detail. Another fun aspect to this assignment was the ability to add sound or effects to the power point presentation. I particularly enjoyed sound bites of the animals that my peers added to their presentations. It made my wish I had done the same. The effects added to the text also kept the audience engaged. this would be particularly helpful with 7th-9th graders, as their attention span are notoriously short.
Posting this concept map was quite the challenge! Several hours have been spent on trying to convert this from a word document to a form that was up-loadable. Finally I was forced to print, then scan, then I was able to post as a JPEG! Earlier today in the process of attempting the conversion, the image became corrupted and I had to rebuild it. Huzzah for success!!!!(and the 20 points )
My rubric was posted on Brendon's blogspot. I did not move it over but the date is included from when I posted it. This should also be on blackboard somewhere.
